Staatssecretaris Dijksma van Economische Zaken wil onderzoek laten doen om kippen genetisch te kunnen manipuleren met een kwallen-gen. De bedoeling is dat kippen eieren leggen die met een bepaald licht fluorescerend oplichten wanneer er een mannelijk embryo in zit. Zo kunnen de haantjes al herkend en vernietigd worden voordat ze uit het ei komen.

Kippen genetisch manipuleren met het kwallen-gen zou een oplossing zijn voor het probleem dat haantjes worden vergast of versnipperd. Dit gebeurt omdat haantjes geen eieren leggen en daarom commercieel gezien waardeloos zijn. Een meerderheid van der Tweede Kamer is tegen en wil niet dat dieren nog verder worden geindustrialiseerd. Dijksma lijkt echter het onderzoek toch te willen doorzetten.

De Nederlandse Vereniging voor Veganisme bepleit een heel simpele oplossing voor het probleem: stoppen met het gebruik van eieren en producten waarin eieren worden verwerkt. Dit zorgt er niet alleen voor dat er geen leghennen en kuikentjes meer lijden en dieren onnodig afgemaakt worden, ook het milieu en de volksgezondheid hebben er baat bij. Eieren bevatten vitamines en mineralen die je gemakkelijk kunt halen uit plantaardige bronnen zoals noten, granen, groenten, peulvruchten en fruit. Dit is ook beter voor de gezondheid, omdat plantaardige bronnen niet de nadelen hebben die eieren wel hebben, zo stelt de NVV.

Dat een plantaardig eetpatroon de toekomst heeft, tonen belangrijke investeerders als Bill Gates die beleggen in bedrijven zoals Beyond Eggs, dat vervanging van eieren in de voedselketen wil bespoedigen.

Verschrikkelijk Foetsie. Afgelopen week was op TV te zien dat Chinese bevolking het bestuiven van planten zelf heeft moeten overnemen:

In China is de Bijenstand al zó ernstig aangetast dat men genoodzaakt is tot het handmatig bevruchten van fruitbomen. De mankracht die dat vergt is enorm en het is feitelijk onvoorstelbaar dat zo’n handmatige aanpak ook wereldwijd uitvoerbaar zou zijn.
