In Gent is er geprotesteerd tegen de komst van de topman van Monsanto. Hij bleef thuis. De afdeling biotechnologie voelde zich ongemakkelijk, ze hebben veel gepresteerd. Jammer dat zo een multinational met de eer gaat lopen.

In de jaren zeventig decimeerde het grassy stunt virus de Indiase rijstoogst. Genetische weerstand tegen deze ziekte werd gevonden in maar één van de 6200 rijstsoorten (check die bizarre namen van rijstziekten). Tegelijkertijd vernietigde bacterievuur 15% van de Amerikaanse maïsoogst, resistentie werd uiteindelijk gevonden in een wilde maïssoort die alleen voorkwam in een bedreigd natuurgebied in Mexico (farmingfutures).
